A cartoon is described in the dictionary as being a 'simple drawing showing the features of its subjects in a humorously exaggerated way'. Cartoons have evolved from their origins as preparatory drawings to satirical sketches in newspapers and periodicals in the 1800s, and more recently to an exaggerated representation of human life as shown by modern examples such as The Simpsons.

Although the satirical types of cartoons sketches still exist, with controversy often surrounding the artist and subject matter, the term cartoon has evolved massively in the last 150 years. A cartoon means something completely different today as TV shows, films, advertisements and comics rely heavily on cartoon characters and the art of illustration in place of realistic drawings or life-like art.

Cartoons, as humorous drawings, originated in 1843 when satirist magazine, Punch, used the term to describe the sketches by artist John Leech. Leech's Cartoon no. 1: Substance and Shadow, shows the first use of the term cartoon in relation to a humorous drawing or satirical sketch. The political or humorous cartoon had been used for years previously, but Leech was the first to coin the phrase.

As early as 1754, Benjamin Franklin created the drawing of a snake in various pieces with the caption 'Join, or Die' to encourage unity amongst the colonies prior to the French and Indian War. The use of editorial cartoons to promote a specific message originated in the early 1700s.

The Use of Strap-lines

Cartoons were often used to promote political or social awareness, as they would appeal to people of all levels of education with a simple message. An easy-to-understand message (the strap-line) would prove invaluable as a persuasive tool and so posters and editorial cartoons would use cartoons with a strap-line to create a brief, concise meaning.

The Franklin cartoon was the clever use of an iconic image with a single line to portray a strong message. This type of cartoon became regularly used in the 1900s when gag cartoons would be published in popular magazines including Punch and the New Yorker.

One of the key artists, Peter Arno, is widely credited for inventing the gag cartoon when working for New Yorker magazine.

As well as the single-caption gag cartoon, comic strips became popular around this time. Comic Strips originated in the late 19th century in American newspapers. The difference between comic strips and the gag cartoons of the same era, is primarily that of length. The comic strip will tell a story in a series of images with text attached in speech-bubbles or captions.

Some of the most famous comic strips that use this traditional method are still in use today. From its beginning in 1950, the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz published a total of 17,897 strips before the death of Schulz signaled the end of the cartoon. Peanuts would be one of the pioneers of the cartoon transition from comic strip to television and film. Others that would make the move with varied success include Dennis the Menace, Dick Tracy, Andy Capp and Garfield. The motion picture would be the biggest step in the evolution of the cartoon, most famously made by the films of cartoon legend Walt Disney.

Disney's first venture into animated film is shown in the Alice Comedies, a series of short films that combine a real girl with an animated cat, all set in front of an animated landscape. This technique was revolutionary and signaled the direction of future live-action/animations including Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Space Jam in the 1990s.

Disney would go on to create some of the most influential cartoons in history, including the most recognizable cartoon character of all - Mickey Mouse. Mickey was created in 1928, first appearing in the Plane Crazy cartoon with his long-term beau Minnie. Mickey went on to star in hundreds of cartoons and remains the most popular cartoon character that Disney ever created, ahead of the likes of Donald Duck, Dumbo and Pinocchio.

The change in media to animated film paved the way for some of the most influential cartoons of the 20th century. As well as the massive number of Disney films that would change the landscape of film forever, many other cartoons would light up the silver screen as the years passed. Warner Bros. cartoons began soon after Disney's inception and would introduce the world to a number of amazing characters that remain popular to this day.

Bugs Bunny appeared for the first time on screen in the 1940 animation A Wild Hare. In 2002, Bugs Bunny was named by a popular television magazine as the greatest cartoon character of all time. Other popular Warner Bros. characters include Speedy Gonzales, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.

Another popular company to produce animated cartoons was the American company, Hanna-Barbera. Responsible for some of the most respected cartoon series in the latter part of the 20th century, Hanna-Barbera produces classics including Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo and The Flintstones. These animations would influence some of the biggest hits of the century, as cartoons began to mimic real-life and have more realistic characters instead of the animals or fantasy stories of Disney and Warner Bros.

As the animated film became the most common place to find cartoon characters, the style, themes and techniques changed dramatically. As situation comedies dominated TV schedules on both sides of the Atlantic, animators would look to recreate this style with cartoons as the main characters. Out of this concept, the most popular animated series of all time was born as the world was introduced to The Simpsons.

The Simpsons were as far removed from the likes of Walt Disney as could be possible. The fantasy, fairy-tale style that was so prevalent in Disney's cartoons was replaced by crude, raw animations of a 'normal' American family. Launched in the late 1980s, the cartoon has remained immensely popular with over 400 episodes and a feature-length movie grossing almost 600 million dollars worldwide.

The Simpsons would be criticised by conservative sections of the US as they claimed it provided bad role-models in the forms of the lazy, incompetent Homer and the naughty, disruptive Bart. The Simpsons would show a normal, working-class family in some realistic and some unrealistic scenarios, yet the characters themselves were always believable and empathetic. The disruptive, anarchic style and often controversial episodes would pave the way for even more controversy and animators pushed the boundaries of acceptability in cartoons.

The most controversial cartoon series of the 20th century would follow The Simpsons with regressive cut-out animation, cartoon violence and satirical story-lines. South Park would parody popular culture and satirize current events, but would arrive amidst a storm of controversy for its toilet humour and offensive language.

174 episodes later, South Park has been running for twelve series and has achieved Academy Award nominations for its feature-length South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Despite its seemingly puerile beginnings, South Park would develop into a cutting social commentary, satirizing subjects as diverse as euthanasia, the church of scientology, sexuality and global terrorism.

The Simpsons and South Park represent the current crop of exciting, contemporary cartoons that will influence the cartoons of the future. There are already countless other cartoons that borrow style, themes and humor from these two pace-setters, with the likes of Family Guy, American Dad and Futurama continuing the trend.

However, Disney has been opting for computer animations with its most recent films including Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and WALL-E.

So is the art of the cartoon dying out in the modern cartoon's home of Florida? With new film-makers, animators and artists always looking for the next-big-thing, cartoons will always be popular for creators and the viewers, so the cartoon will continue to go from strength to strength.

Artist Colony is a "village" simulation game that revolutionizes the genre. Based on concepts similar to games such as the Virtual Villagers series, the goal of Artist Colony is to create and manage a thriving colony comprised of people from all artistic walks of life: from painters and sculptors to singers and guitarists.

The story of Artist Colony starts a generation ago when a pair of best friends - both artists - decided to found a secluded self-sufficient village where people from all artistic talents can live and develop their skills in peace and amongst similarly-minded people. Unfortunately, this prosperity started to unravel when a beautiful sculptress turned up at the colony and drove the two best friends against each other fighting for her love. One friend won her love and had a son with her, but when she ended up sleeping with the other friend and conceived his son, the whole thing fell apart and the colony disbanded.

The game of Artist Colony picks up the story one generation later when one of the sons comes back to the abandoned colony with HIS best friend (cue dramatic music) with the intention of reviving the idea of the artist colony and restoring the village to its former glory.

The game starts with the best friends arriving at the old colony that has fallen into disrepair. The game slowly introduces the mechanics to you while explaining the backstory and the short-term and long-terms goals of the game.

The overall goal of the game is to restore the artist colony to its former glory (while experiencing the developing story of the two half-brothers). This is done by attracting a whole lot of artists to live in the colony and by restoring all its landmarks.

Each type of artist has a "workplace" that they can train in (ie. a recording studio for a singer). In order for more artists to come to the colony, these training centers need to be upgraded. These upgrades and the landmark restorations both require cash, which can be earned by selling masterpieces: works of art produced by your artists. These masterpieces in turn can only be created when your artists have sufficient training and are inspired.

Artists need inspiration to be able to produce great works of art. They can be inspired by beautiful surroundings such as fountains and flower-beds, and through romance with fellow artists. When their objects of affection return their advances, they become inspired to create works of love (think Celine Dion). They can still create masterpieces if their romantic advances are rejected. They'll just paint/write/sing about heartbreak instead (If the artist is a singer, the product will most likely be a country and western song). In addition to all that, the artists also need food and shelter in order to live comfortably; another detail you will need to manage.

The mechanics of the game are simple and elegant. There is enough detail and complexity to keep you interested and engaged in the game, but not too much as to slow the game down or turn it into a chore. What makes the game really stand out is the overall feel. The characters and surroundings have a very charismatic cartoony feel, making you easily fall in love with them. The soundtrack and even the change in seasons and weather make this game very engaging and enjoyable.

Artist Colony isn't a typical village simulation game. Its depiction of a colony of artistic people trying to build a community and reach the pinnacles of artistic excellence is a refreshing change from the traditional simulation game. But above all, this game is all about the story of vision, romance, heartbreak, treachery and drama. Definitely a game you do not want to miss.

Disney lanyard pins are increasingly popular with people who love Disney. Or love collecting. Or both. Pin trading is definitely an enjoyable hobby that's more fun when you realize that once at Disney, it is possible to trade all of them with cast members!

But trading Disney lanyard pins does have an etiquette, although it's pretty relaxed. And here's what you ought to know before going to Disney and start your trading!

First -- Just what Disney Lanyard Pin?

Maybe you've never gone to Disneyland or Disney World. Or perhaps you've been a zillion times, but have not noticed people walking around with lanyards around their necks, sporting pins of all sizes, shapes and colors. No matter, here's a quick overview.

Disney Pin trading has been around many years - it involves investing in a lanyard (or lanyards) of one's favorite amusement park and adding pins into it. The pins are of numerous Disney characters, old and new. The pins are usually pretty small, like the size of a normal lapel pin.

Some pins are rare and quite collectible. Others are not so unusual and are inexpensive -- ideal for starting your Disney pin collection.

Disney pin trading isn't only fun... but very addictive!

Trading Disney Pins

Once you're at Disney, it is possible to trade pins with any cast member that is wearing a lanyard and pins. Here's some of the etiquette for trading Disney lanyard pins with a cast member:

There is a limit for trading with an specific cast member -- only two pins per day. However, you'll be able to trade with as many cast members daily as you desire!

The pin on the lanyard you want to trade has to be an authentic Disney pin -- you simply can't trade knock-offs with a Disney cast member.

The cast member can only trade to get a pin that is not already on their lanyard. If you decide to trade away a Pirate Mickey Mouse pin and the cast member already has this pin on his or her lanyard, you cannot trade that particular pin.

Don't touch or grab a cast member's lanyard. Ask if you need to see something closer and they will hold out the lanyard for you.

You can also have business dealings with other Disney guests. Of course, Disney guests aren't obligated to trade their pins with you...

Watchmen Graphic Novel Should be Left a Comic Book

Back in 1986, writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons formulated a mystery based on the Cold War, wherein the threat of nuclear warfare is an imminent fear. The story explored the possibility that superheroes existed in the 1940s. And the Watchmen were born...

And in this setting of the Watchmen graphic novel, superheroes are roughly classified into two. They are either working for the government, donning their suits while on retainer and paid by people’s taxes, or they are outlawed. Most superheroes not working for the government have decided to embark on other productive endeavors like business, and leave crime-fighting and costume-wearing behind. Some continue to be heroes, but are considered as fugitives, thanks to the law that was passed outlawing superheroes.

Creator Alan Moore cannot be blamed for wanting his art to remain in the chosen medium it was created. Not only due to the huge differences between reading a comic book and watching a film, but also because of the previous experiences he has had with his publisher and the process of converting his work from paper to film.

Initially, he thought that separating himself from the process of converting his work to a movie would turn out fine. Moore admits that he was wrong about distancing himself. The latest of his work to be released as a movie is the Watchmen graphic novel.

“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” one of Moore’s works, was also adapted into film. He distanced himself from the process, feeling that as long as he didn’t see any of the film and had nothing to do with it, everything would be fine.

He was fairly surprised when producer Martin Poll and writer Larry Cohen filed a law suit against 20th Century Fox for alleged plagiarism. They claim that their script - yet to be produced - was copied. Indeed, the two scripts bore many similarities, but these were elements added to the film and were not in any way found in Moore’s comics.

Due to the lawsuit, Alan Moore had to testify in a deposition. The experience, he described, was shockingly painful. As if the misery was not enough, Fox settled the case, signaling to Moore that it was an admission of guilt, something he stated he had no involvement in.

When “V for Vendetta” was made into a film, producer Joel Silver stated to the press that fellow producer Larry Wachowski had talked with Alan Moore, and that Moore was excited about the project. But according to Moore, he adamantly refused to be part of anything with films, and still wasn’t interested in Hollywood.

Alan Moore wanted a public retraction and an apology. While he got an apology from Silver, who appears had also been deceived by Wachowski, there never was a public retraction.

Aside from this, Moore claims that the comic book was specifically about anarchy and fascism. Nowhere in the movie was these two things even seen or mentioned. Clearly, the adaptation of the comic book into a film reinvents Moore’s work into something totally different, something Moore would have not created and would definitely not want to be credited with.

The Watchmen graphic novel became the latest of Moore's being adapted into a film, and was released in 2009. And anyone who has read the graphic novel and seen the film knows that the film was yucky to say the least.

Due to the lack of ability of Hollywood to translate his works into films that fairly reflect his work, it is understandable the reluctance and displeasure expressed by Alan Moore regarding film adaptations. It is bad enough that he doesn’t get paid for his work, he is also stuck with his name attached to work inherently at odds with what and who Alan Moore is.

Boost Team Spirit With Custom Trading Pins

They have an Olympic history. They pique attention, build sportsmanship and boost team spirit. To be so small, you'd think custom trading pins held magic powers for all they are able to accomplish. Their magic lies in what they can do for the kids!

One of the first things parents learn about when their child enters the youth sports arena is team lapel pins. Made specifically for trading with other team players, these pins got their start way back in 1924 at the Olympics. During Opening Ceremonies, athletes and coaches would exchange pins as a symbol of sportsmanship. Today, that same gesture continues, thanks to custom trading pins.

When Do You Trade Pins?

While you can trade pins at any point during the year, many teams follow the same outline set forth by the 2007 Chet Lemon AAU Baseball National Championships. Their official rules state, "Several teams may bring lapel pins to exchange during Opening Ceremonies and during the week. You may consider participating in this activity. Usually, the pins have a team, state or city logo. We suggest pin trading during Opening Ceremonies." However, trading lapel pins also takes place at games, playoffs and regional events.

The Wilder, The Better

As each year passes, trading pins have increased in flamboyance. Because technology has improved over time, manufacturers can be more creative with lapel pins now than they have been in the past.

The trend now is to include spinners, danglers, glitter colors, bobbleheads, blinkies and sliders. The more trading pins move or flash, the better kids love them!

Value = Affordability + Quality

While there are other factors at play, quantity, color and add-ons will make the biggest impacts on the price of lapel pins. An order of 1,000 pins will cost less (per pin) than an order of 100. Typically, the more colors you add to your pins, the more they will cost. Likewise, the more doodads you add (spinners, danglers, etc.), the more the lapel pins will cost.

Watch for companies that offer good value. Practically any lapel pin manufacturer can reduce prices and offer cheap pins that may not last through the season. It's the manufacturers that provide true value - quality materials and workmanship at a reasonable price - that should get your business.

Also look for bonuses. You can sometimes find vendors that provide free color, free proofs and other extras.

Creative Designs

This is certainly not the time for stock lapel pins or ordinary designs. Kids want it all! To make them happy - and proud to trade pins with their fellow players - you'll want eye-popping designs that stand out from the millions of other pins out there.

Ask to see samples of the lapel pin company's work to ensure they have what it takes to craft pins your kids will want to wear and trade.

A Quick Primer On Watercoloring

There is a myth going around that of all the drawing arts, watercolor is the hardest to master. That assessment is far from the truth, according to the many watercolor artists, famous and otherwise.

In fact, they assert that learning how to paint with watercolor is totally fun and easy, especially so if you are artistically-inclined. Another good thing going for it is that it is low-cost and is much easier to conquer than, say oil painting.

Benefits

From the creative point of view, watercolor painting offers just as much artistic possibilities for self-expression as all the others. The satisfaction of finishing your art work is just as priceless as any.

From a practical point of view, watercolor equipments (and materials) are lightweight and easy to transport. The materials (paper, paints, pencil, etc.) are not expensive and easy to purchase.

Watercolor paints are thinned by water and are non-toxic. The paints are cleaned easily from the brushes with water and soap and are not smelly.

For people on the go, the painting kit for watercolors does not take up much room in your bags. Because it is portable and its ease of use, watercolors are preferred by artists in doing their sketches or studies.

Artists usually do their warm up art exercises on watercolor - still life, landscapes, or some abstract portraits to trigger their creative juices. Some experienced artists use it to make small-scale studies for some big murals they intend to do in the future.

Materials and media

For mixed media pieces, watercolor blends well with colored pencils, watercolor pencils, graphite and ink. Artists of the past traditionally use paper as their medium, but now a special watercolor canvas manufactured specially for watercolor use is available as well.

Some creative people paint on antique book pages and on other vintage materials like old postcards and stationery.

Characteristics

Watercolor paint usually has that translucent, ethereal quality that comes out in the finished art work. Some talented watercolor artists layer images and other artistic strokes in such a way that what's underneath shows through. Some of these works are simply breath-taking.

However, the downside is that it is difficult to cover mistakes in a watercolor art work simply because it shows through. (Usually, these professional artists avoid these by pre-planning what they are going to work on, and how to work it out, including those masterful layering strokes.) Thinking through the process is a valuable tool to practice when watercoloring.

Sketching

Like most other artists in other fields, watercolor artists usually sketch in their art composition very lightly, with a pencil, before applying the watercolor.

Notice, too, the total color scheme of the piece is usually lighter than what it appeared to the viewers when it was still wet. Of course, there are other watercolor techniques that are done that makes the work really wet.

Painting techniques

Techniques such as wet-on-wet (very wet brush and wet paper) or wet-on-dry (wet brush on dry paper) are just two of the techniques. Other effects are created with splattering, using salt and others.

However, dried watercolor paint re-wets easily and can be "reactivated".

Once finished, watercolor paintings are sealed with a protective spray. This seals in the colors and protects the surface. Are you ready to do some watercoloring?

Disney pins have always been popular items at the Disney theme parks, but it wasn't until the Millinium celebration debut of pin trading as an official park activity that the popular collectible really took off. The pin trading frenzy is still going strong, with Disney fans buying and selling pins online as well as at the Walt Disney World theme parks, Disneyland in California.

Even park-goers in the Disney parks in Hong Kong, Japan and Paris have been bitten by the pin-collecting bug and they've made it possible for collectors from all over the world to get pins from theme parks overseas that they aren't able to visit in person. And you shouldn't forget about the Disney Stores either, because they often carry their own exclusive pins that can be traded with fans who don't have a store to visit nearby.

Disney releases so many pins in their theme parks every year that it would be impossible to collect all of them so it makes sense for pin collectors to focus on particular types of pins rather than struggling in vain to get them all. Love Tinkerbell? Well, you're in luck because so does Disney and you'll find that there are hundreds of pins featuring the feisty little pixie.

Of course, that doesn't even compare to the number of pins featuring the Disney icon, Mickey Mouse. There are so many pins showcasing Mickey that you'd have a hard time just collecting all of those pins, but even here your collection can be narrowed down to certain types of Mickey Mouse pins. Some particular favorites are pins where Mickey is dressed as the Sorceror's Apprentice, one of his more loveable incarnations. There are also lots of pins pairing Mickey with his creator, Walt Disney, and these are often some of the most collectible items that the Disney company sells.

In addition to character pins featuring the most recognizable characters from Disney's animated films, there are all kinds of pins issued featuring the park attractions and resorts. Some of the most collectible park attraction pins are limited edition issues that Disney releases to coincide with major attraction refurbishments, such as the Disney World Haunted Mansion "Re-Haunting" pins that were released in 2007 when Disney debuted the updated Haunted Mansion attraction in the Magic Kingdom. Naturally, any time Disney World opens a new attraction, such as Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom, you can be certain they'll release some limited edition pins showcasing the new ride.

If you decide you want to get started collecting Disney pins on your next visit to Walt Disney World, you can buy them in the parks with prices starting at around .95 and upwards. But don't just buy pins and bring them home with you. Half the fun of collecting Disney pins is getting to trade them. You can trade a pin with any Disney cast member wearing a pin trading lanyard and you can also trade them with other guests. Just look for other Disney visitors at the theme parks wearing pin trading lanyards of their own and go and approach them and ask them if they'd like to pin trade with you!

Making Your Own Watercolor Paints

I think everyone has had the opportunity to paint with watercolors. Perhaps that is because painting with watercolors has become a regular activity in schools. Watercolors may be difficult to master is subtleties, but unlike oils or acrylics, they are essentially child-friendly. They are so easy-to-use and their water base is non-toxic. This is why most preschools and kindergartens usually use them in parts of their curriculum.

Watercolors are an excellent medium for any budding artist to start in. But before you start painting, how about making your own watercolor paints?

The idea of making paints may sound daunting, but remember most artists before the twentieth century mixed their own paints. With easy access to the ready-made art marketplace, the art of mixing paints is something of a "lost art."

But creating your own watercolor paints is actually pretty easy. Here is an example making the children's version - mixing a batch of watercolors for professional use is a more involved process...

First, you'll have to get together some basic ingredients. You'll need the following:

• 3 tbsp baking soda
• 3 tbsp cornstarch
• 3 tbsp white vinegar
• 1 1/2 tsp light corn syrup
• food coloring

Note that the measurements can be doubled or tripled depending on how many people will be using the watercolor. This should be enough for a small group of four, but for larger groups add a bit more.

By the way, the corn syrup is the binder, the substance that will keep your pigments together, for your watercolor so its pretty important. YBefore there were bottles of corn syrup on the grocery shelf, artists made their own glucose syrup. "Glucose syrup" is just a fancy name for a sugar solution. To make it, just boil two cups of sugar in a cup of water. Mix it well until you have a clear solution. Now that you have your binder, whether a homemade sugar solution or corn syrup, it's time to start.

First of all, mix the vinegar and baking soda together in a small bowl. It will start to foam, but that's a natural reaction, so you just keep mixing. When the foaming has died down, it's time to add the cornstarch and your syrup, to the mix. Keep on mixing until you get a smooth consistency to the mix. This will be your clear base.

Now that you're got your base, it's time to create your color sets. Get several bottle caps or small containers of similar size and pour in the base. After you've used up all the clear base, you just add a different food coloring to each small container. Be generous with your coloring amounts - the color needs to spread well, so this means you also have to stir a bit. When you're done, there's only one step left - put the caps in a cool dry place so that they can dry.

By the next day, you'll have a dry set of watercolor paints ready for use!
