As the poet Shelly says,"Beauty is Truth and Truth is Beauty, And that is all you need to know."
I mention this quote because when it comes to describing the art of Thomas Kinkade - beauty is the first word that comes to mind. Kinkade is called the artist of light because when he paints a window at night - the light streams from it. When he paints a Christmas tree- the Christmas light seem to twinkle.
Beauty and light and it fascinates me. The subject that Kinkade paints are not unusual. They are cottages that probably do not really exist and gardens that do, if you are lucky. Landscapes and small town night scenes and lighthouses.
Kinkade is not about breaking the boundaries of art and that is just fine with me. He creates beauty and he does it very well.
When I place a piece of art on my walls - one question I ask is this: Will I get tired of looking at it? That is a major criteria of mine when it comes to art. Thomas Kinkade passes this test.
Some may think his work is too commercial - it is found on all kinds of decorative items. But I suspect, that a hundred years from now. Even the least expensive piece of Thomas Kinkaid shlock will be considered priceless.
I have often wondered what we would have learned, if a documentary film could have been made of Vincent Van Gogh when he was still alive. Thankfully, we live in an age where we can get a movie made about some of our great artists and see what they are really like.
The Robert Crumb movie "Crumb" shows us a sexually hyper, but frustrated man who is much like the biographical stories and illustration done by Robert Crumb in his comics and books. And, of course, he is not like that at all, being as complicate and simple as any genius artist is.
After seeing him in the flesh, I am eternally thankful that some bully didn't beat him up and break his hands when he was a child. We are lucky to have his talent displayed in this world.
And if you have not yet seen the Robert Crumb movie then you are lucky. It is intriguing and insightful and holds together well as a documentary. If you did know about his art before seeing this flick, you will want to know more... And for us who have enjoyed his art over the years, we get a little better understanding of what he is doing...

Not everyone is lucky enough to own a signed piece of artwork by Olivia de Berardinis to grace their walls, but we can certainly enjoy her work. There have been several videos made of Olivia's pin-ups and other artwork. And this is a very nice way to see some of her best work and get a sense of the range her talent has.
The following video is no exception to this and I encourage you to take a break, spend a few minutes listening to a nice song and viewing some of the best artwork ever produced. It is a bit risque...

Renowned as a world authority on faerie lore, Brian Froud began his working career as a graphic designer. Eventually, he teamed up with Jim Henson (of the Muppets) to work as the conceptual designer for Henson's then upcoming film, THE DARK CRYSTAL.
He continued this position with the Jim Henson Company in the film LABYRINTH as well as JIM HENSON'S STORYTELLER series.
Besides working with the Jim Henson Company, Brian also provided conceptual work on several other projects including Tolkien's THE FATHER CHRISTMAS LETTERS (not released) and the animated film LITTLE NEMO- ADVENTURES IN SLUMBERLAND.
Still his current artistic fame comes from his many paintings and illustrations of faeries and of faeryland... An artist of great vision, Froud has won numerous awards, including the Hugo Award for Best Original Artwork.
While not exactly pin-ups, the beautiful figures he creates are worth hanging on any wall! Take a moment and enter the otherworld...
