Need help identifying a movie?

The movie is very old. It has to be at least 15 years old at this point, maybe even older. I don't remember much about it, but here are the details:

1. The movie was animated in a very strange paper mache' style making it resemble a movie watercolor painting.

2. The two main characters were a dog that could change into any animal (I think he was even voiced by the cartoon voice actor for the animted Garfield series). I believe the dog wore glasses, but maybe not. The other main character was a human named Mumford who never talked, dressed in all black, and an Abraham Lincoln hat.

3. The plot involved some sort of golden spring or coil that could control time.

4. In the finale of the movie the Mumford character walked up many flights of stairs, each covered with traps, humorously maiming himself many times.

5. It used to be shown on classic cartoon network.

6. The Animal and the Mumford character had to serve community serve at a garbage dump called the "Garbagery."

Does anyone know the title of a movie that's about saving trees done in sort of a watercolor look?

About 6 or 7 years ago, I was in math class towards the end of the year and the teacher put in this movie, I'm not sure about how long it was, but it was about saving trees and it was done in what looked like watercolors. It looked similar to the sketchy/colored pencil look of the movie "The Snowman" by Raymond Briggs based off of his book. I really can't remember the title and I would like to see it again.

I'm not sure if this is the one you're talking about, but what jumped to my mind was "The Lorax". It is a book by Dr. Seuss that was made into a short movie. I'm not sure if that's the one you want, but I can't think of any others.

How do I paint with a magazine?

i saw it in a realistic fiction movie so i thought it might be a way... I'm wondering cuz it seems a lot better to do that than buy watercolors.
the man had took a magazine... soaked it (or something like that) then scraped the color out and painted with it, I was wondering if this is a possibility and for elaboration on it if it is.

Magazine inks are not water soluble they use a special type of ink, which is not like the ones used in computer printers. The film exaggerated this process just bit. Even if you extract the ink, it will be so little that anyone will have a hard time painting with it.

There is a technique that some artists use in order to print the mirror image of a newspaper directly onto the canvas. They soak the newsprint first in kerosene or lacquer thinner, then press the paper against the canvas, wait for a while, remove the paper and Whoa! Instant print!

But I suggest you buy some watercolors instead. Start with "student quality" paints so it won't be too expensive. And go for it! :]

Today, Pop Art can be characterized by its vibrant colors, dark outlines and often playful content that make it so attractive to the general public. Although difficult to define any genre of art, Pop Art is particularly elusive in that it reflects the current fads and imagery associated with consumerism and popular culture. As a growing and constantly evolving movement, few people realize Pop Art was founded over five decades ago.

The Golden Age of the Pop Art movement took place between 1958 and 1975. It was one of the biggest art movements of the twentieth century, despite many critics denouncing this new style as "kitsch", or a tasteless and cheap imitation of true, valuable art. The term Pop Art was first coined by Lawrence Alloway, an English art critic, in an edition of Architectural Digest. He used this phrase to describe a break from the elitism that was associated with the predominant art of the time.

The Pop Art movement was the result of a combination of two factors: the 1950's postwar economic boom and a general frustration among artists with Abstract Expressionism. After World War II, the market for consumer goods ballooned as a growing middle class began to indulge in luxury items. As a result, advertising agencies expanded their grasp on the American landscape and utilized radio, television and print to drive demand. This led to products being mass marketed and advertised like never before.

During this boom, many artists were becoming frustrated with the predominant art style of the time, Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Expressionism was a nontraditional art form popular in the early half of the twentieth century. It expressed ideas and emotions through abstract or nonrepresentational means.

A backlash developed against this style, first in Britain and then the United States. Many artists believed it was elitist and exclusionary, as its content was often left to scholars for interpretation. Others noted that these pieces were solely found in the galleries of renowned museums, or in the expensive homes of private collectors.

A desire emerged to make art more accessible to the average American. Artists wanted to take their work out of galleries, and allow them to be appreciated in everyday homes. They began to create content and imagery that was familiar to the blue collar consumer, with a message or meaning that was decipherable.

A handful of artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Tom Wesselmann were pioneers in the history of Pop Art. They recognized the value of comic book pages and modern advertising, and drew inspiration from magazines, television and even film.

Since this Golden Age of Pop Art, a number of waves have come after it. Each generation of Pop Art artists have interpreted the influence of mass media on society differently.

Today, artists such as Romero Britto, Carlos Navarro and Tim Rogerson are a part of the Neo-Pop Art movement. This new chapter in the history of Pop Art utilizes vibrant colors and cartoon themes to convey often complex forms and ideas. Although Pop Art spans over 50 years and has evolved greatly, the original objective of bringing art in to the home of the average American persists.

The history of printing goes back to wood-block printing in AD 200, through movable type and the printing press in the Middle Ages. However, the idea of producing acceptable copies of artwork did not get off the ground until the invention of lithography in 1796.

Since then, reproducing artwork has evolved into the high quality process known as giclee printing, which began in the late 1980's and has developed into a method of producing long-lasting, exceptionally high-quality prints.

With wood-block or engraved printing, an image is cut into a flat surface causing cavities that hold the printing ink. Lithography, on the other hand, uses basic chemistry to produce an image by creating areas on the printing plate (originally made from stone) that are either water attracting or repelling. These areas then either attract or repel the printing ink to produce the artwork.

In the modern lithographic process, the stone plate has been replaced by a flexible plate - usually thin aluminium, Mylar or polyester - that is covered with a light sensitive emulsion. A photographic process is then used to transfer a negative image to the plate, which leaves a copy of the image in the emulsion.

The plate is then placed on a roller that interacts with a second roller covered by rubber. The image is transferred to the rubber-covered roller, which then prints the image on paper fed through the rollers. Because the image is transferred from the printing plate via the rubber roller, the process is often known as offset printing.

Now, artists are turning to the modern giclee process instead of using plates and rollers. The giclee process uses a digital image and an inkjet printer. The name itself comes from the French verb "gicler" - to squirt or spray - and refers to the application of the printing inks by the inkjet printer.

Modern giclee printers use fade-resistant inks that result in a long-lasting, perfectly clear reproduction of the original master. Unlike lithographic printing, where each image requires a print plate for each of the four color inks used in the process - cyan, magenta, yellow and black - and requires that the four separate color images be perfectly aligned, the giclee process produces the image in one hit.

Apart from the improvement in quality, giclee prints are also cheaper to produce and can be produced in low volumes on demand. The artist and printer can also cut costs without the need to store four master plates. Also, as the cost of giclee inkjet printers falls, it is becoming economical for individual artists to acquire their own printer, allowing total control of the reproduction process.

Shunga, An Introduction To A Japanese Erotic Mystery

Shunga, which literally "Images of Spring," is the generic term used to describe erotic prints, books, scrolls and paintings of Japan.    

History  

The beginning of the shunga genre is connected with the origins of Ukiyo-e ('Images of the floating world') and starts with the work of Hishikawa Moronobu and his school between 1660-1670. Originally shunga were published as erotic manuals (guides) for the most popular courtesans in houses of pleasure. But with the growth of prosperity, the expansion of the brothels in Edo (today's Tokyo) and the alterations in the Japanese caste system with the merchants getting wealthier, embracing a hedonistic lifestyle, shunga gained a more diverting purpose. 

Shops in the pleasure quarters of Edo, called the Yoshiwara, sold shunga prints and books as souvenir to the visitors of the brothels. Shunga were also offered as dowry to newly-weds as an educational guide. Around 1765 with the transition to multi-colour woodblock printing, before woodblock prints were colored either by hand or printed with a limited palette, the shunga genre entered new ground (both aesthetically and commercially).

This revival lasted another century ending at the start of the Meiji period (1868-1912) when Japan opened its economic and cultural gates to the West. During the Meiji period only a few artists specialized in designing shunga prints which were mainly influenced by Western art.      

Subjects and Themes  

At first glance a shunga image can have a confrontational effect on the (Western) viewer because of the undisguised way the subject matter has been portrayed or the exaggerated depiction of genitalia. Once accustomed, he can experience the striking compositions and use of color, the humor and the daring handling of themes.

The shunga genre accommodates a wide range of themes. Besides the rendering of conventional heterosexual love-making mostly between married couples or courtesans and their clients, it also dealt with the homosexual and lesbian acts of love, scenes involving hermaphrodites, mythical figures, ghosts, Westerners, bestiality and even necrophelia.      

Censorship 


In Japan, during the reign of the Tokugawa shogunate from 1660 to 1868, shunga were seen as objects injurious to public morals and subject to unavailing censorship.

Shunga Today  

"Recently it has become more widely admitted that, at their best, they are to be ranked - with works by Western artists of the caliber of Dürer, Rembrandt and Degas - among the finest of all graphic art". (Tom Evans -in ' Shunga, The Art of Love in Japan' )  

Over the last decade the attitudes in Japan regarding shunga have changed resulting in the publication of a huge quantity of books including uncensored material and shunga studies in Japan.

In the West, the publications on shunga started in 1975 with the ground-breaking book 'Shunga, The Art of Love in Japan' by Tom and Mary Evans followed by Jack Hillier's 'Art of the Japanese Book' in 1987. The memorable exhibition in 1989 at the Musée d'Ilx-elles in Brussels, where the most impressive works in the show were of the shunga genre, also contributed to a renewed interest.

In 2005, a unique exhibition was held in the Kunsthal Rotterdam called 'Lentelust' with a chronological overview of this art form. A new extensive publication on shunga by Gian Carlo Calza has been planned for the Spring of 2010.

A Little bit about Erotic Netsuke - Japanese Carvings

Kimonos - the traditional garb for the Japanese for centuries - do not have pockets. So how did their wearers carry the various tools and implements needed in daily life? They tied such items to a belt worn with the Kimono. To keep such items from slipping off their cords, small figurines with holes in them were tied to the bottom of the cord and thus the Netsuke was born.

Overtime, these little "stoppers" became a popular form of art, taking the Netsuke from a personal decoration piece to an important part of Japanese sculpture work.

Traditionally carved from ivory or wood, today, Netsukes can be found made from a variety of other materials. This includes ceramic, horn, bone, amber and whale's teeth.

Netsuke depict all kinds of subjects, - fruits and animals, as well as people. One well developed theme is the Erotic Netsuke. These are carvings of sexual depictions and symbols. Erotic netsukes are one branch of the large erotic art world of Japan known as "Shunga" which includes wood blocks, drawings, and even tattoos... Translated literally, the Japanese word shunga means picture of spring, where 'spring' metaphorically represents sex.
