Why in fashion do humans always seem have a nostalgia for styles that happened 20 years ago? This recent decade has seen most things that were popular in the eighties re-appear. Kim Wilde, the 80's pop starlet is now back out on the road touring once more and Spandeau Ballet (the band your mum loves) have reformed. Thrash metal, a subgenre of metal that died because of 90s grunge has dug itself out of the grave and continued its metal party with new thrash bands such as Evile and Municipal Waste popping up and 80's bands Kreator, Exodus and Testament are getting some much deserved recognintion. Were seeing more bright coloured clothing and quirky t-shirts coming back 'in' -so why do we think of the 80s so fondly?
- Some of us werent there. I can honestly say i cant remember the eighties -because i was born in 1984, so by the time the 90's came around i really didnt have that many memories of it. But thats my point -people werent they to experience it, so they will wonder at some point what it was like. Just dont ask your parents kids -may spoil the illusion.
- Music was fun in the 80s. Synths, guitar solos and pyrotechnics all seemingly vanished overnight once the 90s came in and music was no longer fun any more. Seemingly each decade takes a stand against what came before it, stopping the influx of one music genre and replacing it with something different. And not a single Oasis song in view.
- The recession. We have to escape from the dreaded credit crunch, and what better way than a decade where consumerism was rampant. The ninities was dingy and depressing with Brit Pop, so we cant go back there to escape. Having some fun again with music and style will help us not crack under the strain of the recession, and the eighties has helped do that.
- A reflection, and a rebellion. The style of the times reflects whats going on with society at the moment, and its also a direct contrast of whats come before it. Which means only one thing:
I'm going to have to sit through a 90's revival in afew years time. Damn, delay this for as long as possible with some converse trainers and some cool t-shirts.
